Diamonds in Songs
We are told that diamonds are a girl’s best friend while a man’s best friend is traditionally a dog. We aren’t going to go over who gets the best end of that trade off, sure dogs give companionship and protection but they really don’t ever increase in value or require financing to purchase. Valentine ’s Day is a big day that most lucky ladies receive some sort of diamond trinket for a gift.
Diamonds have long been praised in music and song. There are many different references to the precious stone over the years, but we are just going to give you the top five so that you can create the ultimate Diamond play list.
#5: “Her Diamonds” by Robb Thomas
This hit love song climbed as high as number #23 on the billboard chart after it was released in 2009. It’s a beautiful song with sad lyrics that translate the emotional issues of Robb’s wife’s battle with auto immune deficiency.
#4: “Diamonds are Forever” by Shirley Bassey
This was the title song for the 1971 James Bond film of the same name. Bassey made her second entry into the Bond film soundtrack archives after her performance of “Goldfinger”. Bassey’s haunting and recognizable voice with the great horns in the band make this one a must have on your diamond play list.
#3: “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” by Kanye West
Every playlist needs some hip hop and rap, Kanye brings it all to the table like no one else. They sample the Diamonds are Forever lyric with surprisingly genuine lyrics about the perils of fame.
#2: “Diamonds and Pearls” by Prince
This selection is from the 1991 album that Prince did with The New Power Generation. This was the title track and was a top five hit on the billboard chart. If you are not sure that you remember this song just look at the ever so memorable chorus that goes, “ D to the I to the A to the M O to the N to the D to the pearls of love.”
#1: “Diamonds ”by Rhianna
The newest selection on our playlist is the best of them yet. This hit song was released in late 2012 and is burning up radio request call lines across the country. The catchy lyrics, memorable chorus, and her infectious voice helped the song hit number 1 on the billboard chart.
