When it comes to determining the value of an estate piece, it is usually helpful to understand the difference between antique jewelry and vintage jewelry.
A piece is considered vintage if it is less than 100 years old, but not new. Vintage jewelry isn’t usually as valuable as antique pieces, but there are some obvious exceptions. Vintage jewelry from fashionable designer, like Cartier or Van Cleef & Arpels often appreciates in value, even if it is still vintage and not antique. Of course, vintage jewelry is still valuable due to the materials it is made of, and the price appreciation of those inputs.
Vintage Jewelry we purchase: Retro Jewelry, Contemporary Jewelry, and Designer Jewelry
An antique is defined as a piece that is over 100 years old. With a piece this old, condition is often an issue, but depending on the state of the piece, there can be great value in the jewelry based on its age, provenance and demand from the market. In the jewelry business we tend to round the age of a piece up if it is close to this age. For example an art Deco piece from the Jazz Age (1920-1935) is usually considered antique despite the fact that it doesn’t meet the strict definition.
